Growth

Port Moody is projected to add more than 6,200 homes in the next 10 years.Classrooms are already tight. What should the board do first?

Four choices that could reach the board table.

Set direction and policy

The board establishes priorities, policies and the strategic direction for the district.

Approve the budget

Trustees scrutinize and approve the annual budget and decide how district resources support local priorities.

Hire and oversee the superintendent

The board hires the district’s chief administrator and holds that role accountable for implementing board direction.

Represent the community

Trustees listen to students, families, educators and residents, then bring those perspectives to the board table.

Advocate beyond the district

The province controls major funding and capital approvals. Trustees make the case for local needs and build support for action.

The important limit

A trustee governs. A trustee does not run a school.

Individual trustees do not direct teachers, evaluate staff, resolve classroom-level disputes or make unilateral decisions about a specific school.

Authority belongs to the board acting together. The board sets direction; district staff manage day-to-day operations.
